A sympathetic flood-protection solution built with recycled stone and traditional dry stone methods

⭐ Project Overview

This project involved creating a natural stone water-defence cladding system for a riverside property in Belper. The house sits approximately 10 feet above river level, meaning flood protection was essential, but any work also had to respect the character and requirements of a listed building.

The solution needed to be strong, discreet and visually in keeping with the original structure.

🪨 Reclaimed Stone & Sustainable Materials

To maintain authenticity and reduce waste, the cladding was constructed using recycled stone recovered from a demolished extension and internal walls on the property. Additional dry stone walling stone was sourced from an existing stone heap within the surrounding garden.

Every piece of stone was carefully selected and prepared to ensure a consistent appearance and structural integrity.

🧱 Structural Protection Using LEGO Block Construction

Because of the height difference between the house and the river below, a strong hidden structure was required to protect the building during flooding events. The main body of the wall was constructed using interlocking concrete “LEGO” blocks, providing a solid and reliable flood-defence core.

These blocks allow for exceptional strength while remaining quick to install and adaptable to ground conditions.

🧱 Dry Stone Fascia for Listed Building Compliance

To meet planning and conservation requirements, the visible face of the structure was finished with a traditional dry stone fascia. This ensured the water-defence system blended seamlessly with the listed building and surrounding landscape.

The result is a wall that looks entirely natural while providing serious protection during periods of high water.
