Pointing That Protects the Stone
The mortar in a stone wall is meant to wear out before the stone does. Over the years the joints crumble, rain gets in, frost opens them up further, and eventually stones work loose and the wall starts to move.
Repointing stops that before it turns into a rebuild. We rake the old mortar out to a proper depth, clean the joints back and repoint by hand, finished to suit the wall, whether that’s a cottage, a garden wall or a boundary that’s stood for a century.
A lot of older walls in Derbyshire have been repointed in hard cement at some point, which traps water in the stone and makes it crumble around the joints. Where we find that, we take it out and replace it with lime mortar, so the wall can dry out the way it was built to.

Raked Out Properly
Old and failed mortar cut back to a sound depth, not skimmed over, so the new pointing bonds and lasts.
Lime Mortar Repointing
Lime mortar lets the wall breathe and moves with the stone, which is why older walls were built with it.
Matched Finish
Colour and texture matched to the existing joints, so the repointing sits right with the rest of the wall.
Cement Taken Out
Hard cement pointing removed carefully before it does any more damage to soft stone.
Lime Mortar Repointing
If your wall or house is stone and more than a hundred years old, it was almost certainly built with lime. Repointing it in cement looks fine at first. But cement is harder than much of the local stone and doesn’t let moisture out, so the water escapes through the stone instead, and the faces start to crumble and flake.
Lime mortar repointing works with the wall rather than against it. It’s softer than the stone, lets the wall dry out naturally, and if anything has to give over the years, it’s the joint, which is easy to repoint again, not the stone.
We use lime on older walls, stone cottages, outbuildings and listed or conservation-area properties, and we can match the mortar to what’s already there. Not sure what your wall was built with? Send us a photo and a postcode and we’ll tell you honestly what it needs.
If stones have already come loose or the wall is leaning, that’s a repair rather than repointing. Have a look at our stone wall repairs page.
